Escape the Ordinary: The Ultimate Weekend Guide to Kalamaja

Kalamaja is a mood. Once a humble 14th-century fishermen’s harbor, this neighborhood has transformed into Tallinn’s undisputed capital of cool. With its colorful wooden houses, industrial architecture, and bohemian atmosphere, it’s the perfect playground for a weekend escape.

Whether you are a local looking to rediscover the area or a visitor passing through, here is how to spend the perfect weekend in our favorite corner of Tallinn—featuring a healthy dose of culture, food, and, of course, a trip to see us at Heldeke!

Saturday: Industrial Chic and Vaudeville Vibes

10:00 AM – Fuel Up at Telliskivi Creative City

Start your morning right on the border of Kalamaja in the bustling Telliskivi Creative City. Grab a specialty coffee and a fresh, buttery pastry at one of the local bakeries. Spend an hour wandering through the independent boutiques, checking out local Estonian design, and admiring the massive street art murals that cover the old railway warehouses.

1:00 PM – Maritime Marvels at Lennusadam (Seaplane Harbour)

Walk down toward the coast to visit Lennusadam. Housed in a historic, concrete seaplane hangar built over a century ago, this museum lets you step inside a real 1930s submarine (the Lembit), explore historic ships, and dive deep into Estonia’s maritime past.

4:00 PM – A Leafy Stroll Through the Wooden Streets

Head away from the coast and lose yourself in the quiet, residential heart of Kalamaja. Take your time walking down streets like Valgevase and Kungla, where you’ll find beautifully preserved “Tallinn Houses”—iconic, two-story wooden apartment buildings with distinct stone central staircases.

7:30 PM – Step Into the Matrix at Heldeke!

As the sun starts to dip, it’s time to head to Tööstuse 13. Welcome to Heldeke!, Tallinn’s only vaudeville-style theatre-bar.

Escape the Mudane: We are a show venue with a distinct speak-easy vibe. Grab a drink from our extensive local craft beer menu or sample the largest whisky selection in the neighborhood.

Depending on the night, you might catch boundary-pushing burlesque, international stand-up comedy, mind-bending magic, or live music.

Sunday: Slow Mornings and Social Saunas

11:00 AM – A Late Brunch and Park Walk

Sundays in Kalamaja are meant to be lazy. Find a cozy local café for a late brunch, then take a peaceful stroll through Kalamaja Cemetery Park (Kalamaja park). Today, it’s a lush green space where locals walk their dogs and read under ancient trees—a perfect spot to recharge.

5:00 PM – The Ultimate Estonian Ritual: Sunday Social Sauna

You can’t wrap up a weekend in Estonia without a proper sweat. Head back to Heldeke! for our legendary Sunday Sauna Social.

Our wood-fired Estonian sauna is unisex, completely inclusive, and open to everyone. It features the same friendly, laid-back atmosphere of visiting a sauna at a friend’s country home. Alternating between the hot steam room, a dip in our cold pool, and a refreshing drink from the bar is the absolute best way to wash away the weekend and prep for the week ahead.
