The story begins in 1881 when Scottish businessman Abram Lyle, a devoutly religious shipowner and sugar refiner, discovered a way to transform a by-product of the cane sugar refining process into a deliciously rich, golden sweetener. First sold commercially in 1885 from his Plaistow Wharf refinery in East London, Lyle’s Golden Syrup quickly became a household staple, famous for its buttery flavour and versatility in baking, porridge, pancakes, and desserts.

The brand’s famous green-and-gold tin, featuring a dead lion surrounded by bees (inspired by the biblical story of Samson and the phrase “Out of the strong came forth sweetness”), holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest unchanged branding, remaining virtually identical for over 140 years until a 2024 refresh for squeeze bottles and other formats (the classic tin retained the original design).

In 1921, Abram Lyle’s company merged with rival sugar refiner Henry Tate & Sons (founded by philanthropist Sir Henry Tate, creator of the Tate Gallery) to form Tate & Lyle, a powerhouse that once refined half of Britain’s sugar. The combined company endured world wars (the factory survived dozens of Blitz bombings) and even supplied tins to Captain Scott’s Antarctic expedition in 1910.

In 2010, Tate & Lyle PLC divested its sugar refining operations, including the Lyle’s Golden Syrup brand, to American Sugar Refining (ASR Group), a major US-based sugar company owned by the Fanjul family. Today, Lyle’s Golden Syrup – including the convenient squeezy bottle format – is manufactured and marketed by Tate & Lyle Sugars (part of ASR Group) at the historic Plaistow refinery in London. It remains 100% vegan, gluten-free, and made with natural ingredients, preserving the original recipe while offering modern easy-pour options for everyday use. The brand continues to be a quintessentially British icon, exported worldwide and cherished for bringing that unmistakable “golden” sweetness to generations of families.
