Terry’s is a historic British chocolate and confectionery brand with roots tracing back to 1767, when a small shop opened in York, England, selling candied peel and sweets. In 1823, chemist Joseph Terry joined the business, eventually taking ownership and expanding into chocolate production, marmalades, and candied fruits, renaming it Joseph Terry & Sons. Under family leadership—particularly Sir Joseph Terry and later his descendants Frank and Noel Terry—the company flourished in the early 20th century, opening the iconic Art Deco-style Terry’s Chocolate Works factory in York in 1926. This era saw the launch of enduring classics like Terry’s All Gold chocolates (1931) and the groundbreaking Terry’s Chocolate Orange (1932), which revolutionized the industry with its tappable, segmented design infused with real orange oil.
During World War II, the factory temporarily shifted to producing aircraft parts, but postwar challenges like rationing led to a focus on top products, phasing out the earlier Chocolate Apple in favor of the Orange. After remaining family-run for generations, Terry’s changed hands multiple times starting in the 1960s (including Colgate-Palmolive, United Biscuits, and Kraft Foods), with the York factory closing in 2005 and production relocating to Europe. Since 2018, the brand has been owned by French confectionery company Carambar & Co. (with ongoing talks in 2025 for potential acquisition by Ferrara Candy under the Ferrero Group), which produces Terry’s Chocolate Orange and variants in Strasbourg, France—selling over 44 million units annually worldwide while preserving its quirky British heritage and “tap it and unwrap it” ritual.
